Net Zero Passive Solar Remodel
We have begun to remodel a 1960 home that will be a super-insulated, net zero energy passive solar home. Planning included Passive House standards and possible Passive House certification until it became clear that PHIUS does not yet know how to deal with hot humid marine climates such as ours in Virginia Beach. Though we abandoned the idea of Passive House certification, we are still adhering to PH standards modified for our climate to create a super-insulated shell that will be very comfortable year round while using very little energy. What little energy is needed will be generated by solar panels on the roof.
We are reusing as much as possible and attempting to preserve the architectural character of the existing home. Rather than tear out the existing concrete/slate steps, we are designing around them and the original fireplace with 1950s Florida brick is being saved.
